Protected Characteristics
What are the Protected Characteristics? The term Protected Characteristics arose with the introduction of the 2010 Equality Act. This followed campaigns from groups and individuals to promote and protect human rights.
There are 9 Protected Characteristics listed within the Equality Act:
· Sex
· Sexual Orientation
· Age
· Disability
· Gender Reassignment
· Marriage & Civil Partnership
· Pregnancy & Maternity
· Race
· Religion or Belief
At Charles Saer protected characteristics are embedded within our curriculum to help build a welcoming, inclusive school community, and develop children’s understanding of equality and fairness
In addition to this we celebrate awareness days and events that are diverse and inclusive. We feel it is important to encourage our children to think about people’s perspectives and experiences, and introduce new cultures, situations and ways of life.
Children in KS2 regularly watch Newsround which explores and reports on issues around the world.
Books in our school library and within our reading scheme include a range of authors and reflect diversity.
