British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

· democracy

· rule of law

· individual liberty

· mutual respect

· tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

British Values

Charles Saer promotes ‘British Values’ through the school’s curriculum and the wider curriculum and supports the development of the whole child, because we believe that every child matters. We recognise that such development is most successful when these values and attitudes are promoted by all the staff and provide a model of behaviour for our pupils.

‘British Values’ have been identified as:

The ability to understand and communicate are the most important areas of learning. We ensure that pupils know that they will be listened to and respected.

We empower our pupils by giving them opportunities to make choices about the things that they believe to be important. By valuing each child, and by listening and responding to them, we demonstrate that we support democracy and liberty.

We have an active student leadership team:

The election of the Head Boy and Girl and the School Council members reflects our British electoral system and demonstrates democracy in action: candidates make speeches, pupils consider characteristics important for an elected representative, pupils vote in secret etc. Made up of one representative from each class, the School Council meets regularly to discuss issues raised by the different classes.

Pupils are taught how to manage their behaviour and take responsibility for their actions. We can help our pupils to understand the connection between actions and consequences. Our children know that it’s ok to make mistakes because we can learn from them.

These values are reinforced in different ways:

· Visits from authorities such as the police and fire service

· Bikeability lessons enable children to understand the rules of the road and the potential dangers encountered should they break those rules.

· During Religious Education, when rules for particular faiths are thought about

· During other school subjects, where there is respect and appreciation for different rules

Pupils are encouraged to become good and valued citizens. We do this by supporting each pupil to become as independent as possible. We endeavour to demonstrate that everyone has rights; this includes the right to say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. We encourage our pupils to share their views, back up their ideas but show respect to others. One of our core values is respect. We want each child to have a strong moral compass and to develop this they must feel valued and listened to.

We encourage our children to take responsibility in their learning and that with certain rights come certain responsibilities. Learning to do things independently is an important part of learning to understand yourself.

We promote each pupil’s inclusion in activities, settings and locations that are appropriate to them individually to meet their needs. Our children feel valued and respected and in return we expect them to respect others.

We believe it is important to facilitate opportunities to be part of the community as the pupils, families and staff have much to offer in the development of community cohesion.

We have high expectations of achievement and behaviour. Children and staff are polite and kind.

We teach the children that conflict will be dealt with calmly and fairly. All members of the school family are valued equally. We celebrate behaviour that goes above and beyond and taking care of our school environment and celebrate each other’s achievements whether that be in or out of school during assemblies.

We experience different faiths through hands on experiences, educational visits, linking with other schools and an enriched curriculum. We are always seeking to offer new experiences for our children and liaise with other schools to achieve this.

•Through Religious Education, PSHE and other lessons we develop awareness and appreciation of other cultures – in English through a range of fiction and non fiction texts and in art and music by considering cultures from other parts of the world.

•We celebrate cultural differences through assemblies, themed weeks, noticeboards and displays
